Meet the 2004 OPWA Scholarship Winners

Philip Holdredge, winner of the $7,500 OPWA Scholarship in honor of Toshiyuki Horie, Pentel of America, LTD., will be a freshman at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, where he will pursue his academic interests of physics and political science. Philip was the recipient of numerous awards during his high school years, including a Bausch & Lomb award for science and Highest Average for Accounting, Business Law, Physics, Math and Calculus. A participant in the 2003 National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, his hobbies include reading, writing, fencing and playing guitar. Philip's father, George, works at MeadWestvaco in Sydney, NY.

Joshua Cook, winner of the $5,000 OPWA Scholarship in honor of David Anderson of Richards Pen Shop, will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next year, as part of efforts to fulfill a life-long goal of becoming a physician specializing in neuroscience. In addition to a successful stage career during high school-Josh appeared in over ten shows with leads in productions such as The Crucible, Bye Bye Birdie, A Christmas Carol and Anything Goes-he is a also a dedicated volunteer with local community organizations such as his school's Kiwanis Key Club branch, the American Cancer Society and local shelters for the elderly and abused women, among many others. Overall, Josh has posted over 300 hours of community service. His father, Howard, is a warehouse manager with S. P. Richards Co. "The Anderson Scholarship," says Josh, "is not only an incredible privilege, but will also prove very valuable in the face of ever-increasingly college bills and I am deeply grateful."

Chris Contee plans to attend Washburn University in Topeka, KS where he will major in financial management. An avid baseball player, Chris earned Topeka All-City Honorable Mention Honors and was named All-League Baseball Team Captain. His father, Greg, is a production worker at Adams Business Forms.

Timothy Fazio will be a freshman at Plymouth State University, where he plans to major in sports medicine. A keen athlete himself, Tim was a member of his local Divisional and WCDO All Star Football Team and also served as an assistant coach and umpire for a local Pee Wee Baseball League. Elizabeth Londer will attend the University of Vermont. A People-to-People Ambassador to England, Ireland and Wales last year, Elizabeth is the recipient of the Annual Holocaust Remembrance Award from the Borough President of Brooklyn. Active in local community organizations, she is a volunteer at a local hospital and a dog shelter. Her hobbies include gymnastics and tennis. Recommended by Alexander Supply Company.

Michelle Manard-Simpson will attend Tennessee Technological University, where she will pursue a career in nursing. In addition to serving on her school's Senior Student Council and being elected Senior Class President, Michelle's extracurricular activities include Varsity Football Manager and membership in the Drama and Yearbook Clubs. "My attending Tennessee Technological University would be mostly impossible with the financial aid I have received and I greatly appreciate the faith that has been bestowed on me," she says. Jaspreet Singh will begin a six-year program at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he will study pharmacy. Winner of his school's Presidential Award for Academics and holder of a cumulative GPA of 5.35 over four years, Jaspreet was named an Illinois State Scholar and graduated in the top 1 percent of his class. While at High School, he also helped tutor students in an after-school program and volunteered in the emergency room of a local hospital. Recommended by Fellowes Manufacturing.

Eva Udobina was born in Estonia and moved to the United States at the age of nine. Eva will attend Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., where she plans on concentrating on either business or biology. Recommended by the Southworth Company.

Sarah Wood is currently an Accounting and Finance double major with a minor in English at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo, where she has been on the Vice President of Academic Affairs' List for four consecutive seminars. After graduating, she plans to obtain a Master's Degree in Accounting. In addition to her academic achievements, Sarah is involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including Cardinal Key National Honor Fraternity, where she serves as parliamentarian, and Alpha Sigma Gamma, a local service sorority, where she holds the position of recording secretary.
